Wow they're both here and looking great Laurie Allee. I saw your tweet and these blogs are both kind of enormous so congrats on the achievement. The typewriter section is really damn cool. :)
I am so glad to see someone who feels like this the way I feel. I think it is very ironic that I found your tweet about this on the day I decided to leave Twitter. I had not heard of several of the social media alternatives that you mention in your section on that subject. I am really inspired by Hit Record, so thank you for pointing the way to something that really feels like a sharing with people instead of the usual stuff.
Welcome, Caroline! I think that there are more of us than we realize ... we just don't see them because they're not on social media! I hope you love Hit Record as much as I do. Let me know if you work on a collaboration!
I love this Laurie. Wow what a great idea and execution and I am all in on the idea of ridding ourselves of social media. I feel like we have all lost it when I look at facebook these days. Jan even mentioned thinking of quitting Instagram.
I hope you are going to cover the resurgence of vinyl. I think you once talked about that on glimpses of south pasadena.
Great to see you here and thanks for the kind words. I understand why Jan is feeling compelled to leave IG. I sound like a total curmudgeon but I felt like it was turning into a reality TV show and the more I saw of people's lives the less I actually SAW of them in my real life. I definitely like feeling like I'm spending quality time with people now instead of clicking like buttons.
Damn you are a good writer. I have enjoyed your Twitter feed because you always have something useful, funny, interesting or beautiful to offer which is a great way to use a social media platform. Well done there. Well done here.
Laurie, are you going to start blogging here again soon? I've read and printed out most of the information here, and I want you to know how much it has helped me to curb my social media addiction and start thinking in terms of how screens are an affront to real life. I feel somuch better and I thank you. Please add to the site soon!
Thank you for the lovely feedback! I'm thrilled that you have found a way to curb your social media addiction. I find that the Covid-19 crisis has brought me to a new understanding of the GOOD role that tech and, yes, even some social media (I said SOME! Not a lot!) can play during times of crisis. I hope you check out my latest post. xo
This is a perfect post for election day. Thank you for putting this into words. I have been unable to express how I feel and now I can just forward your post. You should write something about analog activism.
Ironically I found your blog while "doom scrolling" Twitter. like the earlier commenter, I want to thank you for your post. I have been feeling like the only one missing civility and decorum. I don't think having manners and etiquette with our fellow citizens means we have to accept bad things from the government or give up on our ideals. I also think we can learn to live together. We used to.
I am writing you from Los Angeles and I can't believe the fighting I have been seeing.

ReplyDeleteHi Pinks! Thanks for visiting! I am actually working on a memoir about all of this... but I have no idea if anyone other than me will ever see it.
